Germany is one of the most attractive destinations for international students. The reasons are many: a wide variety of excellent universities, a very diverse offer of attractive undergraduate and postgraduate courses, the possibility of studying in both English and German, and quite cheap costs. If these arguments convince you, here we give you all the information about the requirements, financing, and other steps to prepare your way to Germany.

There are many reasons why studying in Germany maybe your best decision. There are currently more than 400 higher education centers that enjoy a prestigious tradition and are recognized internationally for their high academic level. They also offer excellent research possibilities, state-of-the-art equipment, as well as modern laboratories, and extensive, well-equipped libraries.

Today, more than 9,200 undergraduate courses are offered at German Higher Education Institutions. That gives you the freedom to choose from highly specialized programs that exactly match your academic interests. These programs also have a credit system and internationally recognized titles are awarded.

Currently, about 15% of students enrolled in German universities are foreigners. And also outside the academic field, Germany is a multicultural country that allows you to meet a great diversity of interesting people from different parts of the world. Another advantage for international students is that their chances of admission to German universities are very high because places are reserved specifically for them in many institutions.

Do you think it will be very expensive? Don’t worry. Since Germany’s public education system is state-funded, both foreign and German students can enjoy the benefits of free or very low-cost access to a vast network of universities and academic programs. The vast majority of German universities do not charge any tuition for their undergraduate programs, except for the state of Baden Württemberg.

Normally you should calculate about 800 euros per month to cover all living costs, including food, accommodation, and medical insurance. At the moment, the DAAD does not offer any type of scholarship in Chile to finance undergraduate studies. But even so, it is very attractive to study for your undergraduate degree in Germany: you will receive an excellent level of education that often costs much more in other countries.

For admission to Higher Education in Germany, two groups are distinguished:
Bildungsinländer: those, with or without German nationality, who have completed the German baccalaureate (Abitur). The Bildungsinländer compete for a place with each other with their Abiturnote. It is important to mention that two thirds of undergraduate university courses have a “numerus clausus”, that is, a high average of the final grade of the Abitur, which is fixed year after year, is needed to obtain a quota.

Bildungsausländer: those, with or without German nationality, who did not complete the German baccalaureate (Abitur). As they are for example: PSU, International Baccalaureate (IB), German International Baccalaureate (GIB), etc. The Bildungsausländer compete for a place with each other with their respective final secondary grade (in Chile: NEM). Here it should be mentioned that all races have a percentage of their quota reserved for the Bildungsausländer (Ausländerquote).
