Established in 2006, the Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship is to advance the growth of international student education in Shanghai while encouraging an increasing number of excellent foreign students and scholars to attend East China Normal University.

About the Scholarship:

East China Normal University (ECNU) was established in Shanghai in October 1951 and is one of the most prominent universities in China. It is supported by the national top university construction programs “Project 211” and “Project 985” and is one of the most prestigious institutions in the world. In 2017, ECNU was selected as one of 36 Class A institutions to be included in the Chinese government’s Double First Class University Plan, which was announced in 2017. Because of its two gorgeous campuses, which are located in Shanghai’s Minhang and Putuo districts and occupy a total area of more than 207 hectares, East China Normal University (ECNU) has long been referred to as a Garden University. Since China’s opening to the rest of the world in 1978, the East China Normal University (ECNU) has grown swiftly into a comprehensive research university. There are four faculties, thirty full-time schools, four colleges, eight advanced research institutes, one college of further education, and one national training center for secondary principals at the University of Michigan right now. 84 undergraduate programs are offered by the university’s 58 departments, which include humanities, education, science, engineering, economics, management, philosophy, psychology, law, history, and the visual and performing arts. Aside from that, the University provides 30 doctorate programs, 35 master’s programs, one professional doctoral program, 21 professional master’s programs, and 26 post-doctoral mobile research stations, among other things. As the first normal university created after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the East China Normal University has placed a high value on teacher preparation. The Ministry of Education’s Training Center for Secondary School Principals, which is housed at ECNU, serves as a one-of-a-kind training ground for secondary school principals on the Chinese mainland as well as a center for advanced studies for secondary schools in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. ECNU is home to two State Key Labs, one National Engineering Research Center, one National Field Observation and Research Station, seven Key Labs or Engineering Centers, six Key Research Bases for Humanities and Social Sciences, one Ministry of Education Base for Strategic Studies, and one Ministry of Education International Cooperation Laboratory. The Shanghai Municipality additionally has 10 Key Labs or Engineering Centers, 16 Social Sciences Innovation Bases or Studios, and four university think-tanks that serve the needs of the city. The institution sponsors or supervises the publication of nearly 30 academic journals and magazines, the majority of which are published in English. Besides having a library collection of more than 4,800,000 books, the institution also has affiliations with 47 primary and secondary schools as well as kindergartens. The importance of internationalization is highly valued by the ECNU. In addition to more than 200 internationally recognized universities and academic institutes, the university has formed exchange and cooperate partnerships with many more. It holds a unique position in the field of foreign Chinese education because it was one of the first Chinese colleges to provide such courses. One thousand nine hundred and sixty-nine of the university’s 4,000 faculty members are professors or associate professors, including 18 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Currently, there are 15,454 full-time undergraduate students and 19,212 full-time graduate students enrolled at the university. There are approximately 5,000 international students enrolled at ECNU as well. Following the university’s slogan, “Seek truth, foster uniqueness, and live up to the name of a teacher,” ECNU has achieved significant successes in the areas of talent development, scientific research, community service, and international exchanges, among other areas. It has made major contributions to the development of Chinese basic education and teacher training, as well as to the acceleration of local and national economic development, as well as the promotion of scientific and social advancement. As the country and the city have developed and transformed, the university has benefited tremendously from these changes and developments. While working gradually toward its aim of becoming a world-class university with a diverse range of first-class disciplines and a well-coordinated discipline development, ECNU is also in the forefront of China’s efforts to modernize its teacher education system. The Internationalization of ECNU’s Development is extremely important to the organization, which has a wide range of impact and a high reputation throughout the world. More than 150 internationally recognized universities and academic institutions have established exchange and working partnerships with the university. By adhering to the university motto, “Seek Truth; Foster Originality; and Live Up to the Name of a Teacher,” Eastern China Normal University has achieved tremendous success in the areas of talent development and research; community service; and international exchange. As a result, it has made major contributions to the development of Chinese basic education and teacher training, as well as the growth of economics, science, and society on a local and national level, both locally and nationally. With the expansion and change of the country, as well as the modern international metropolis of Shanghai, the institution has tremendous prospects for growth and development. Working steadily and enthusiastically towards its goal of becoming an internationally renowned high-level research university with a number of first-class disciplines and a well-coordinated discipline development, while also taking the lead in developing China’s teacher training, ECNU is making steady and significant progress.
