The Department of Higher Education and the Workforce now offers the Missouri Higher Education Academic Scholarship Program and Bright Flight Mo Scholarship to eligible students. The Missouri Bright Flight Scholarship is a merit-based program that encourages top-ranked high school students to attend approved Missouri post-secondary schools.

Bright Flight Mo Scholarships were appropriated by the Missouri General Assembly in 1986 to encourage high-achieving high school students. Initially, Bright Flight Scholars received a statutory maximum of $2000 per year which fully covered their tuition costs at the time.

Yet after a period of rising tuition costs that easily outpaced inflation, Bright Flight covers only a fraction of what a student spends on tuition at the University of Missouri.

Qualification rating and how much can I receive?

The ACT and SAT scores that qualify students graduating in the current school year are retested and announced each fall. However, these qualifying scores are subject to the scores of students who were high school seniors in the last academic year.

For example, the 2023 qualifying scores are based on the 2022 test scores of all Missouri high school students. Therefore, since the minimum score is defined by a percentage of test takers, the score is subject to changes every year.

Also, if you have taken the ACT or SAT in your high school or sophomore year, your score will be accepted as long as you earn the qualifying scores advertised in your senior year of high school.

Eligibility

To become a Bright Flight Scholar, you must meet the following requirements:

Be a resident of Missouri and also a United States citizen or permanent resident.
Have a composite score on the ACT or SAT in:
the top 3 percentile of all Missouri students taking those tests, or
the top 4^thor 5^thpercentiles of all Missouri students taking those tests.
Also, achieve the qualifying score by the June test date immediately after your high school graduation.Please note that scores earned on the July test date immediately following your high school graduation do not qualify for the Bright Flight scholarship program. (Only composite test scores obtained on national test dates or special test dates approved by testing companies are acceptable. Residual test scores are not accepted.)
Enroll as a first-time student and receive the scholarship in the academic year immediately following high school graduation, receipt of your General Education Development certificate, or completion of your high school courses, if you are homeschooled.
Enroll full-time at a participating Missouri school. Full-time enrollment is defined as a minimum of:
*12 semester hours, or
*6 semester hours for students who are unable to enroll in 12 hours as a result of a disability defined by Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Disabilities.
Submit supplemental eligibility information, if requested, by the deadline set by MDHEWD.
Not be seeking a degree or certificate in theology or divinity.

Student Renewal

Continue to meet the eligibility criteria for initial students.
Receive the scholarship for at least one semester per academic year, beginning with the school year immediately following your senior year of high school, receiving a GED, or completing high school courses if you are home-schooled.
Maintain a minimum cumulative average of 2.5 and maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined by your school. However, if this is the first academic year in which you received a Bright Flight payment, this requirement does not apply.

Students who have graduated from Missouri Virtual Public School completed a home school program, or earned a high school equivalency certificate by passing the GED test may be considered for the scholarship program.

How to apply

There is no Bright Flight Scholarship online application. Rather, MDHEWD will receive your ACT or SAT composite score(s), along with approved Missouri college or university options, from your ACT or SAT test records.

Also, please note that it takes approximately six to eight weeks after each national exam date for MDHEWD to receive assessment information.

Brilliant Flight Eligibility Approval

Eligible students will receive approval letters from MDHE for qualifying scores achieved on the June ACT and SAT test dates.

In addition, information about your eligibility status is also available by logging into the Student Portal. However, you must choose to update your portal login to view your eligibility information.

Letters of approval are provided beginning in the spring of your senior year in high school.

You will be notified if you did not indicate a Missouri school choice or if you provided conflicting information (for example, information indicating that you are a Missouri resident but not a United States citizen). To ensure your eligibility, always choose at least one approved Missouri school when taking the ACT or SAT, even if you plan to attend school in another state.

Deadline for corrections

Each year, the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development set a deadline date for eligibility corrections. However, the submission of eligibility corrections for 2023 high school graduates who have achieved the qualifying score ends when the deadline is July 31, 2023.

However, we advise 2023 high school graduates who qualify for the Brilliant Flight Scholarship 2023 to check back regularly for updates.

In the meantime, if you do not provide all necessary information to MDHEWD by the deadline, you will be considered a late applicant, and your award will be subject to the availability of funds, even if you previously received an approval letter.

Additionally, completion of the FAFSA is not required to receive a Bright Flight scholarship. However, if you choose to complete a FAFSA, information on that application or its updates may affect your eligibility for Bright Flight, even if you have already been notified of your eligibility.

SCHOLARSHIP PORTAL
