The Beverly J Smith Scholarship holds a rich historical significance as a scholarship with a long-standing tradition. Back in 1881, Marion Talbot and Ellen Swallow Richards arranged a gathering in Boston, Massachusetts. They invited female students from 15 of the 8 colleges at that time.

The objective of this gathering was to establish an organization for female college graduates. This organization aimed to support women in utilizing their education by providing them with enhanced opportunities. Additionally, it sought to encourage and assist other women in pursuing higher education.
