About the Great Minds Initiative

The Great Minds Initiative is a 3-6 month internship competition at one of IBM’s research labs in Zurich, Nairobi, or Johannesburg for students from Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. It offers students a unique opportunity to work with world-class scientists at the industry’s leading IT research organization.

Great Minds internships will take place in 2023. Selected students will define the exact start time and duration on an individual basis, considering their academic commitments and the availability of IBM employees.

IBM Research Has been teaching Great Minds courses for more than ten years. The experiences on both sides have been very positive. This program also benefits faculty members when Great Minds laureates provide their universities or departments with valuable information on real industry issues, advanced IBM technology, and IBM Research contacts.

Great minds and good ideas are the engines of innovation. In keeping with its close ties to universities, IBM is seeking the best brains and the hottest IT and social challenges for internships at IBM Research. You can do an internship at one of IBM’s research labs in Zurich, Nairobi, or Johannesburg.

position paper

The position paper (pages 1-2) should refer to the following points:

  • What are the most interesting and relevant applications in your areas of interest (selected from the list of topics)?
  • In your opinion, what are the main technical challenges of these applications?
  • What do you personally want to achieve in these areas?

Read the research areas of IBM Research – Zurich and Africa Labs to understand the projects you could work on. However, you do not need to focus on these areas when writing your summary paper.

Application procedure:

A faculty member must nominate the participants. A letter of recommendation from a faculty member is required.

To enter the Great Minds competition, see the detailed instructions for students at the link below.

  • Send your CV and position paper (in English, PDF format) to your professor before February 25, 2023.

IBM University Relations Directors from participating countries and a committee of IBM technical experts review the applications received from faculty, from which they can select the best candidates at their discretion. You will be notified by the end of April 2023 if you are one of the winners.

The laureates will begin their internship in 2023 at an agreed date. Do not forget to suggest the possible dates and duration of your internship (3-6 months) in your CV.
