ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

The Arquia Foundation, taking into account the educational value of practical knowledge of the profession and geographical mobility, announces the XXIII edition of the arquia/scholarships contest, for which it awards 39 scholarships aimed at students in the last years of their degree and recently graduated young architects, destined to carry out professional internships in architecture studios and cultural institutions and the sector.

DURATION
The duration of the internship period will be six (6) months, the scholarship is not renewable, and with an approximate dedication of 40 hours per week.
Carrying out the internship does not imply the assumption by the parties of more obligations than those strictly established in these bases, and in no case will it imply the existence of an employment relationship between the beneficiary and the Centre.
It means that the Arquia Foundation has made the appropriate arrangements with the architecture studios and institutions participating in this student grant for them to welcome the beneficiaries as interns, having obtained their authorization. However, the Arquia Foundation cannot guarantee compliance with the scholarship program if reasons beyond its control are given.

CANDIDATES. Those architecture students and young architects with Spanish or Portuguese nationality or citizens with a residence permit in Spain or Portugal who, on the date of completion of the application submission, meet the following requirements may apply for the scholarship:

a. STUDENTS
a.1. Having passed at least 60% of the credits necessary to obtain the qualifying title for the exercise of the profession of architect in any architecture school in Spain or Portugal.
a.2. Be enrolled in the 2021/2022 academic year in an architecture school in Spain or Portugal.
b. ARCHITECTS: Have obtained the qualifying title for the exercise of the profession of architect in a school of architecture in Spain or Portugal or have obtained the title outside of said countries and approved in one of them, after April 30, 2021.

2. Contest

NOTES ON PARTICIPATION

a. You can choose to participate in one of them or in both simultaneously. 12 scholarships are announced for the contest modality and the rest for the file modality. To ensure an adequate geographical distribution of the scholarships, they will be weighted proportionally to the number of valid registrations received by the study center and modality.

b. Candidates may choose to carry out internships in all destinations offered by the Arquia Foundation within the Program, selecting their preferences in their registration as long as they meet the specific requirements of each scholarship

ACADEMIC RECORD. Candidates will be selected based on their academic records. This will be assessed by the average of the marks obtained in the subjects passed in the degree, as well as by the average of the marks obtained in the subjects passed in Projects (for this purpose, all those that depend on the Department of Architectural Projects will be considered). Said average grades will be calculated by the applicant, as specified in Annex I of the Bases.

Competition. The students will be selected by virtue of the material contributed to the contest, as specified in Annex II of the Bases.

THEME OF THE 2022 COMPETITION “A HOUSE, A STUDIO, AN OFFICE”
In a natural or urban environment, characterized by a marked identity, it is proposed to design an architecture for living and working.

The location of the project is a personal choice. The chosen place must be identified with a precise character or with a reference element, such as the relationship with the presence of a river, a lake, a certain view, a topography, etc. Or, explore unique urban conditions: the trace of ruin, an unfinished square, the proximity of a relevant pre-existence, the limit of a historic town or generic urban outskirts without apparent quality.

The program will consist of a house for a family of 5 people with two adjoining workspaces: an atelier for a young architect with an office for 10 people and a studio for a photographer. Each area will have its own access, must preserve some privacy, and may be organized independently or grouped in a single building.

The project must respond in a sensitive and unexpected way to the chosen context, highlighting the specific physical and atmospheric qualities that characterize it, thus trying to shape a place and not just an architecture.

The proposal will reflect on the intimate conditions of living and the collective conditions of working. with economical use of constructive means, it will give shape and meaning to the intermediate spaces: those that mediate between the different programs and those that arise between the architecture and the built or natural landscape.

Everything necessary to understand the project will be summarized in a Pdf panel in horizontal A1 format (72 dpi) and a maximum size of 10 MB.

The required graphic information will include the main images of the project. a planimetry of the environment. most significant plans, sections, and elevations. possible perspectives, axonometric views, collages, sketches, and photographs of models.
Finally, a synthetic text of 100 words must clearly and precisely explain the design arguments that support the proposal.
