Are you an Australian artist who wants to pursue your passion and develop your skills in one of the nine categories of the arts: acting, architecture, ballet, instrumental music, painting, poetry, prose, sculpture, or singing? Do you want to travel overseas or interstate to study, explore, and collaborate with other artists and cultures? Do you want to receive financial support and recognition for your artistic talent and potential? If yes, then you might be interested in applying for The Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship.

The Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship is a prestigious scholarship program that aims to support and nurture young Australian artists who have outstanding ability and promise in their chosen field of the arts. The scholarship is offered by Perpetual Limited as trustee of The Marten Bequest, a charitable trust established by the late John Chisholm Marten (1908-1966), a theatrical artist and author who had a lifelong passion for the arts and wished to help aspiring artists achieve their dreams.

The scholarship provides financial assistance for travel, study, and maintenance either in Australia or overseas for a period of one year. The scholarship amount is $50,000 per scholar, which will be paid in two instalments of $25,000 each. The scholarship also provides various benefits and opportunities that will enhance your artistic and personal growth, such as:

• Access to prestigious conferences and events, such as the Skoll World Forum, the Ditchley Conferences, and the One Young World Summit.

• Exposure and participation in artistic residencies, workshops, festivals, exhibitions, and performances.

• Networking and collaboration with other Marten Bequest Scholars, alumni, faculty, and professionals from different backgrounds and cultures.

• Mentorship and guidance from Perpetual Limited’s network of advisors and partners, who are experts and leaders in various fields and industries.

To be eligible for The Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

• You must be a native-born Australian citizen aged 21-35 (17-35 for ballet).

• You must have applied for admission to a full-time or part-time course of study or training at an accredited institution either in Australia or overseas in one of the nine categories of the arts: acting, architecture, ballet, instrumental music, painting, poetry, prose, sculpture, or singing.

• You must have demonstrated outstanding ability and promise in your chosen field of the arts through your previous achievements, awards, performances, publications, exhibitions, or reviews.

• You must have a clear vision of how you want to use the scholarship to further your artistic development and career goals.

• You must have a passion for finding innovative and creative solutions to artistic challenges or creating positive change in your community through your artistic expression.

To apply for The Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship, you must first apply for admission to your desired course of study or training at an accredited institution either in Australia or overseas. You must submit your application before the deadline specified by each institution, which may vary depending on the level and type of course or training.

Once you have applied for admission, you must submit an online application for the scholarship through the official website. You must complete all sections of the application form and upload the following documents:

• A copy of your birth certificate or passport as proof of citizenship and age.

• A copy of your academic transcript or certificate as proof of education level.

• A copy of your acceptance letter or confirmation of enrolment from your chosen institution as proof of admission.

• A project proposal outlining how you plan to use the scholarship to further your artistic development and career goals (maximum 1000 words).

• A portfolio showcasing your artistic work in your chosen category of the arts (maximum 10 pages for written work or 10 minutes for audiovisual work).

• Two letters of recommendation from professional referees who can attest to your artistic ability and potential.

The selection process will be based on your academic merit, artistic excellence, motivation, potential, and impact. The number and amount of scholarships awarded will depend on the availability of funds and the quality of applicants. You will be notified by Perpetual Limited if you have been selected for the scholarship.
