Studying a profession in London: the National Vocation Qualifications

National Vocation Qualifications (NVQs) are professional skills that are acquired through training and/or experience.

There are five occupational levels or standards:

  • Level 1 – simple and routine tasks
  • Level 2 – varied tasks under the supervision
  • Level 3 – complex non-routine tasks
  • Level 4 – tasks with responsibilities performed autonomously
  • Level 5 – managerial tasks including analysis, planning

The NVQs are organized by professional areas:

  • Animal and plant care
  • Extraction of natural resources
  • Construction
  • Engineering
  • Industry
  • Transport
  • Trade
  • Health
  • Services
  • Teaching

To demonstrate that you have the skills of a certain level in a certain area, you must have previous work experience (except for level 1) and pass specific tests for each level and for each professional sector.

Many colleges and universities offer courses to earn NVQs. They are practical classes similar to those of the Formative Cycles in Spain.

From level 3, the tests include the observation of your work by a third party (advisor) and interviews with your bosses and co-workers.

Level 5 is considered equivalent to a university degree.

The NVQs are an alternative for those who do not want or cannot go to university or for those who dropped out at a very young age.

Currently, the NVQ system has been replaced by the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) system.

This is a credit learning and training system based on the European Qualifications Framework for Continuing Education. Each credit is equivalent to 10 hours of study and there are eight levels of difficulty, from level 1 (basic knowledge) to level 8 (advanced knowledge).

Depending on the number of credits you can obtain the following academic qualifications:

  • Title – 12 credits
  • Certificate – 36 credits
  • Diploma – more than 37 credits

Diplomas are equivalent to Level 2 or 3 NVQs.

It is more practical training that is aimed at getting a job instead of going to university. The concept is similar to the Formative Cycles in Spain.

The areas in which you can obtain these titles are very varied, for example, child care, health, and social care, business management, or customer service.

You can study for these degrees at many universities and colleges, for example at the Open University, which is called the Open University in the UK.

Study a university degree in London

University education in the United Kingdom is based on the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ), which in turn is based on the credit system of the Bologna agreements that govern all university-level training in the European Union.

The traditional university degree in the UK is a Bachelor’s, which required three years of study. From there, the Master’s was studied and, finally, a Doctorate was made.

Nowadays, depending on the number of credits, a series of university-level degrees can be achieved, starting with the Certificate, then the Diploma, and then the bachelor’s.

It usually takes a year to get each of these titles, so for all practical purposes, nothing has changed from what existed before.

If you want to study a particular subject at a British university, you can use this search engine.
