The Walton International Scholarship Program for University Studies in the United States creates life-changing opportunities, defending the faith and empowering young minds to initiate a significant impact in Central America and Mexico for more than a quarter of a century.

Walmart founder Sam Walton and his wife, Helen, launch the program this year with a commitment to fund 60 scholarships for students targeting three renowned Arkansas universities

The objective of the program has been to promote democracy and free enterprise in Latin America through education.

Rigorous selection processes are conducted each year in El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Belize, and Mexico to identify who will make up the next distinguished group of students.

One of Helen Walton’s favorite sayings serves as the inspiration for this show: “It’s not everything you put together, it’s everything you spread that tells us what kind of life you’ve lived.”

The International Walton Scholarship Program regards those words carried out by each Walton Scholar as part of their commitment to return to their home countries to make meaningful and lasting contributions to their communities.
Alumni have become influential leaders for several of the world’s most successful corporations, as well as for government, education, religious sectors, and many other non-profit areas.

Every year a new class of students enter the Walton International Scholarship Program motivated to follow in those steps.

CREATING A VISIONARY OPPORTUNITY. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE WALTON SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM.

More than a quarter-century ago, Sam Walton and his wife, Helen, started a visionary program, the Walton International Scholarship Program, that continues to foster opportunity and shape the world far beyond the borders of the United States.
During their trip to Central America in early 1985, the Waltons learned that Central American students were being recruited from universities in the former Soviet Union. However, they believed that it was essential to expose Central American students to the virtues of democracy and capitalism.

In May 1985, the Waltons responded with a donation to three respected Arkansas religious institutions – Harding University, John Brown University, and the University of the Ozarks – to fund scholarships for students from each of the seven Central American countries. and later, Mexico.

Several alumni are now in leadership positions in some of the most successful companies in Central America and Mexico. Others have started programs and organizations to lift their communities out of the cycle of poverty.

These success stories continue to grow as new classes of Walton International Scholarship Program students explore their own potential and prepare to follow in the footsteps of those who came before them.

“If we want the future leaders of Central America to know the benefits of a free society, we need to bring large numbers of student generations here to the United States.” – Sam Walton.
