In honoring the name of Bob Hawke in his lifelong support to the indigenous people’s rights and the vision to an inclusive and fair Australia, the  Aboriginal Teacher Scholarship will be offered for the academic year of 2022-2023. The Aboriginal people in Australia will be provided an opportunity by Edith Cowan University in partnership with the Department of Education to further their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at Edith Cowan University and to increase the number of secondary school teachers in Australia.

The Department of Education is committed to creating a culturally engaging environment based on the strengths of Aboriginal students to engage them in learning and enable them to succeed academically and socially. Edith Cowan University will be providing an opportunity to aspiring students who will complete and meet the qualification of the scholarship.

Scholarship Eligibility 

To be considered for the scholarship program, the students must meet the eligibility requirements of the university:

  • The students must be identified as Torres Strait Islanders or Aboriginal residing in Australia.
  • Not granted in any of the scholarships or other grants and financial aid support from any scholarship for the Department of Education’s purpose of the study.
  • The students must have confirmed to express an interest in working as a teacher in a secondary level in Western Australia public schools after the degree completion in education.
  • The students who don’t have degrees are qualified as a teacher.

The applicants must need to provide proof of the following:

  • Must be enrolled at an accredited university in education and already completed not more than a year of full-time study as the basis of the qualifications.
  • Must be intended to be admitted at any of the accredited universities until the end of the semester of 2022.

Two annual Scholarship Awards

Undergraduate Scholarships worth up to $30,000which includes:
  • $28,000 in total to support the students in completing their bachelor’s degree (secondary). That’s $7,000 annually of full-time study or an equivalent.
  • $2,000 Employment Allowance if you undertake full-time teaching in a public school in Western Australia within 12 months of completing the course.
Postgraduate Scholarships worth up to $16,000, which includes:
  • $14,000 in total to help you complete your Master in Education degree. That’s $7,000 annually for equivalent full-time study at the university.
  • $2,000 Employment Allowance if you undertake full-time teaching in a public school in Western Australia within 12 months of completing the course.

The Criteria for Selection 

Students who will be applying for the scholarship are required to prepare written statements at least one page for the selection criteria of the following:

For Undergraduate 

  • Must be able to demonstrate relevant attributes in personal that influence people, students, family, and communities in a positive way.
  • Seeing yourself as a future teacher, you must articulate your personal experience, for example for your family and in the community that will support the achievements, engagements, and wellbeing of the Aboriginal students.
  • Leadership  strengthen vision that will create opportunities for every student/

For Postgraduate:

  • The personal and social qualities they display will help build the future of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal school well-being, engagement, and achievement.
  • A vision of your future as a teacher in the public school, based on your Aboriginal identity and the strength of your experience in guiding and influencing culturally appropriate approaches to schools.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills in giving opportunities for all students to strengthen, contribute to, and benefit.

Application Guidelines

The students are required to review the application process and complete all the documents to be considered on the scholarship. All incomplete applications will not be considered.

  • The applicants must download the scholarship application forms and must completely fill up all relevant sections.
  •  Must be able to complete the selection criteria written statements.
  • Applicants must prepare their resume and had it ready for submission which also include the recent experience, job details, and any activities that could help with your application
  • Gather the documents of the degree certificate and proof of admission or intention to apply. If you are not currently registered, please provide a reference letter confirming your intention to be admitted before March 3, 2022.
  • Must email all the supporting documents and completed application forms, please keep in mind that all documents and applications should be in PDF form in one single file and email to  [email protected]

After completing the application guidelines, the students will be receiving an email that will acknowledge their application receipt. All completed applications will be reviewed by the Department of Education.

Once the review is done for all the documents and applications, all students will be notified in regards to the results and the next steps in receiving the scholarship award.

Scholarship Deadline 

The deadline for completion and submission of the necessary documents will be until March 3, 2022. The Edith Cowan University in partnership with the Department of Education will offer the scholarship annually. The students must read the terms and conditions of the scholarship program.
