The Rex Elliot Wegener PhD Scholarship is a new research opportunity made possible by Mrs Catherine Wegener’s generous donation in memory of her late husband Rex Elliot Wegener, who died of malignant mesothelioma in 2017.
The Rex Elliot Wegener PhD Scholarship will be supervised by Associate Professor Klebe of Flinders University, and will contribute to our collective knowledge of treating patients with mesothelioma. Despite the fact that asbestos is a global problem, Australia has the highest rate of malignant mesothelioma per capita in the world, with more than 700 new cases diagnosed each year. In addition, it is estimated that at least 1,500 Australians have lung cancer as a result of asbestos exposure. Asbestos was widely used in Australian homes over the last century, with disastrous consequences for those who were exposed
