The Jason Lang Scholarship Program was established in memory of Jason Lang. The late Jason Lang is a 17-year-old high school student who was killed in a school shooting.

This scholarship program recognizes the outstanding academic achievement of students pursuing full-time Alberta studies after high school and not only stops at the recognition but also rewards the efforts made by students by awarding scholarships to students, encouraging them to continue in their undergraduate or professional program of study.

These scholarships are funded by the Government of Alberta through Alberta Advanced Education and are administered by the University of Alberta in conjunction with  Alberta Student Aid.

What You Need To Know About J Ason Lang Scholarships

The Jason Lang Scholarships are funded by the Government of Alberta through Alberta Advanced Education and administered by the University of Alberta in conjunction with  Alberta Student Aid.

This scholarship is offered by the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund and the average amount offered varies.

Level/field of study

This scholarship is open to first-year university students to study at any school of their choice in Canada. The number of scholarships is limited, so the Foundation cannot award prizes to all eligible applicants.

The scholarship is open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Scholarship Benefits:

The Jason Lang Scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, recognize and reward the outstanding academic achievement of Alberta high school students and encourage them to continue in their undergraduate or professional program of study.

Ason Lang Scholarship Eligibility

Candidates must:

  • Be a permanent resident of Canada, a protected person of Canada, or a citizen of Canada
    • Have at least a 3.2 GPA based on at least 80% of a normal full load (i.e. a minimum of 24 units of course weight for most programs) completed between the duration of September 2021 to April 2022 at the University of Alberta.
    • Note: Applicants should note that for those who did not attend the U of A in the year 2017 – 2019, their application cannot be submitted by the U of A to Student Aid Alberta for this scholarship. In such a case, applicants will need to contact their previous institution for application information.
  • Continuing in the second or subsequent year of an undergraduate program or continuing in any year of a professional or graduate program
  • Be enrolled full-time for a minimum of one term in the academic year, 2020 – 2021 in an undergraduate or professional program in Fall 2020 and/or Winter 2020 at an Alberta post-secondary institution.
  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate or professional program such as Medicine, Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, or Veterinary Medicine at a participating post-secondary educational institution in Alberta. It should be noted that students in postgraduate studies (master’s or doctoral level) are not eligible for this scholarship.

Applicants who are in an official cooperative work period, internship, or exchange program offered by the University of Calgary in Fall 2021 and/or Winter 2021 are eligible for this scholarship application.

Applicants must be residents of Alberta as defined by Alberta Student Aid. According to the Alberta Scholarship Act, a resident of Alberta is:

  • A person who has been a permanent resident of Alberta for 12 consecutive months immediately prior to attending a post-secondary institution, or
  • A person whose guardians or parents have maintained a permanent residence in Canada for 12 consecutive months immediately prior to beginning post-secondary studies and reside in Alberta, or
  • A person who was married to a resident of Alberta immediately before beginning post-secondary education

The evaluation will be awarded to Cooperative students on the basis of matched academic terms (cooperative terms of work will be excluded).

How to Apply for Jason Lang Scholarship

Notification

Notification will be sent by the Registrar’s Office in late October (for those who applied before September 15) or in late February (for those who applied before January 15) as to whether your application has been forwarded to Alberta Student Aid for complete revision.

For successful applicants afterward, checks will be issued directly from Alberta Student Aid in December (if they applied before the September 15 deadline) or April (if the application was submitted by them before the September 15 deadline). January 15).

For applicants who may have a change in their place of residence after their nomination has been submitted, please contact Alberta Student Aid.

Additional information :

  • Applicants who are enrolled in postgraduate studies or open studies are not eligible to apply for this scholarship
  • University of Calgary courses are not combined with courses completed at another institution for eligibility; Term courses for spring or summer are not considered.
  • For applicants who attended another post-secondary institution last year and are transferring to the University of Calgary in the 2022 academic year, they should contact their previous post-secondary institution for information regarding their eligibility for the Jason Lang Scholarship this year.

Award notification and payment process

For fall, email notification, verify student center, and award disbursement is scheduled for October 15, 2022, October 16, 2022, and December 2022 respectively, while for winter, the schedule for email notification, check student center, and prize disbursement is as follows, February 4, 2019, February 5, 2022, and March 2022, respectively.

Applicants should check the status of their application through their Student Center by navigating through the “Finance” module.

The student’s qualifications as nominees become certain if they view the Jason Lang Scholarship and External Disbursement status.

Successful recipients will receive checks directly from Student Aid Alberta, therefore applicants should ensure the address in their myUofC is up to date to ensure their check is mailed to the correct address.

Only selected recipients will be notified, as the Office of Student Awards will only notify applicants who meet all eligibility requirements and have been successful recipients.

Students must continue their full-time post-secondary studies in the current academic year.

Student ineligibility for a Jason Lang Scholarship establishes if:

  • They are enrolled in a one-year certificate program,
  • If your post-secondary studies are interrupted for more than one semester in the next academic year,
  • Are recipients of a Louise McKinney scholarship program for the same period of study, or
  • They have received a lifetime maximum of three Jason Lang Scholarships.

Nominees for the Jason Lang Scholarship must be enrolled in eligible Alberta public post-secondary schools (this includes accredited degree-granting colleges, public colleges, universities, and private colleges).
