Study in America Today

Obviously, if you want to go to university in the United States, you must first finish your high school studies in your country, or if you prefer, you can also study High School in the United States.

In addition, once completed you will have to go to your institute or school to obtain your academic records in order to:

  1. Translate them into English (last three years of high school).
  2. Evaluate and validate them with a specialized company.

These two steps are necessary for your high school diplomas to be validated by the American system.

Finally, you will not need to pass the PAU or Selectividad in Spain, since this is a university entrance exam in Spain and not in the United States.

If your country is not Spain but there is also a university entrance exam, you will not need to do it, since the United States has its own entrance exam, as you can read below.

ATTENTION! Even if you haven’t finished high school yet, you can and it is also recommended that you start contacting and applying to American universities before you graduate.

Ideally, you should start looking for colleges and scholarships 1-2 years before you graduate from high school, since the selection processes for the best universities start 8-10 months before the start of the university course.

As for academic records, it is not necessary to have them ready at the time of applying to the university, since, as you have seen, the processes begin before most students have finished high school.

PD1: In Spain, the baccalaureate refers to the last two years of secondary school, not university.

PD2: If you want to study Masters in the United States or a doctorate, you must validate your bachelor’s or bachelor’s degree studies from your country of origin.

2. Compulsory entrance exams

As I mentioned before, American universities have their own entrance exams and requirements to study in the USA, which are:

  1. The SAT test , which measures your skills in math and English.
  2. The TOEFL test , which measures your English skills.
  3. The GMAT exam and the GRE exam (only in the case of master’s degrees in the USA).

You need to pass these two exams and get good grades since universities value them highly in their selection processes and especially when awarding academic scholarships.

If you need more information about these two exams you can click on the links above.

You will find two very complete guides with all the information you need to pass them.

3. Be admitted to an American university

Once you have fulfilled the two previous points (validate your academic records and take the exams) you will be in a good position to be admitted to a good American university and thus meet the requirements to study in the US.

If you still haven’t found your ideal university, I recommend the following guide to universities in the United States. You will find rankings of all kinds to find the one that best suits your needs.

Once you have chosen it, you must apply to it and send them all the necessary information that they ask for. If everything goes well and they accept you, they will send you the following documents:

  1. Form I20 (F1 and M1 visas)
  2. Form DS-2019 for the J1 visa

These two documents certify that you have been accepted to an American university.

And what is this for? In order to obtain your student visa😉

4. Get your student visa

We are finally nearing the end of meeting all the requirements to study English in the United States.

In this step, you will have to obtain your student visa, a mandatory visa that all foreign students who want to study in the United States need.

Without this visa you will not be able to enter the country.

In order to obtain it, I have prepared a guide with all the steps and documents you need.

You can find the guide by clicking here: Student visa for the United States

5. International Student Health Insurance

As you well know, healthcare in the United States is private, so you will have to take out medical insurance yes or yes.

Universities require it for all international students.

But don’t worry because most American universities have one included in their university fees and tuition for all their international students.

I myself use the one provided by my university.

International Student Scholarship – LSA University of Michigan awards a small number of International Student Scholarships each year to new LSA students. These awards are renewable for four years of study and recipients are selected based on the information provided through your scholarship application and undergraduate application for admission.

International students admitted to the College of LSA should complete the International Student Scholarship Application as soon as possible to ensure they are considered for these limited opportunities.nThe earlier a student applies, the better their chances of receiving a scholarship.
