About the Scholarship:

The University of Auckland, which first opened its doors in 1883, is widely considered as New Zealand’s top-tier university in terms of graduate employability. It was the first university in the country to do so. During the Great Depression of the early 1930s, there was a marked surge in interest in scholarly investigation. During their time at university, a group of students founded a literary journal called Phoenix, which eventually became the focal point of the first literary movement in New Zealand’s history. The institution built the country’s largest library, which opened its doors in late 1960s. Approximately 10,000 students graduate from the University of Auckland each year, out of a total enrollment of more than 40,000 students over its five campuses in New Zealand. In addition, the institution is home to the largest research organization in New Zealand, with more than 13,000 employees and postgraduate students working in fields ranging from fundamental research to applied research. Eight faculties, two major research institutions, as well as additional institutes and centers, make up the University of Auckland’s teaching and research facilities. The university is comprised of several faculties, including the faculty of arts, the business school, the science faculty, the creative arts faculty and industries, the medical faculty and health sciences, the education faculty and social sciences, the faculty of engineering, the faculty of law, the Liggins Institute, the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, and a number of research institutes and centers, among others. QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020 placed Auckland University in the top 50 universities worldwide for 13 of the subjects that they offered in the previous year. More specifically, the university’s three subjects – archaeology, education, and pharmacy – received world rankings of 25, 27, and 27, respectively, according to the Times Higher Education ranking system. Furthermore, the university generated approximately $283 million in annual research revenue in 2018, which came from both the public and private sectors. According to the review, it received 33 percent of the money based on the number of research degrees that were successfully completed. It also received funding on the basis of foreign research income, which accounted for 36% of the total. Furthermore, by reaffirming its position as the nation’s preeminent research institution, the university received a 31 percent increase in overall funding. With one of the most renowned alumni networks in the world, Auckland University is a great place to work. In addition to Han Niu, who graduated with an MA in Screen Production from Auckland University in 2014 and is currently working on a feature film project named The Manifesto, the university has produced several other successful alumni, including the Beijing-based filmmaker Han Niu. Clorinda di Tommaso, a perfume brand manager who graduated with a BA degree from Auckland University in 2002, went on to get a translation diploma and a Master’s degree in Italian Cinema from the university. It is the largest research organization in New Zealand, with more than 12,000 professionals and postgraduate students engaged in both fundamental and applied research at the University of Auckland. In terms of research revenue, the University generates more than $200 million every year. Auckland UniServices Ltd, the University’s knowledge transfer company, is the largest commercialisation company of its kind in Australasia, generating revenue and creating new employment possibilities for the University and the wider New Zealand community. At any given time, it has 1,200 active projects with more than 300 New Zealand-based companies. For fiscal year 2016, UniServices earned revenues of $114 million, issued more than 50 intellectual property licenses, and established more than 11 firms to commercialize University research and innovation. Over the previous ten years, the University has filed more than 140 patent applications through UniServices. In addition to the general public, the results of this research are delivered to the corporate community, with which the University has a total of 2,500 active research contracts at any given moment. The University of Auckland is not only New Zealand’s largest university, but it is also the country’s highest-ranked institution, according to academic rankings. While the academics at this school are of the greatest caliber, the school’s exceptional location allows students to not only concentrate on their studies but also to take advantage of everything the country has to offer. Whether it’s seeing huge city sites just a few steps away or hiking and spending the afternoon at the beach just a short drive or ferry trip away, there’s always something to do on campus!
