With this PhD studentship in the topic of Experimental Aerodynamics and Environmental Flows, you will have the opportunity to work with our world-renowned experimental fluid mechanics research group. If you work in the experimental fluid mechanics research laboratory, you will join a group of highly driven researchers whose efforts are geared toward applying cutting-edge diagnostics to better understand the physics of turbulent flows. We are a member of the National Wind Tunnel Facility of the United Kingdom, and we have multiple wind tunnels and water channels on our campus for the study of experimental fluid mechanics (see www.southampton.ac.uk/windtunnels/ for more information on this).

The goal of this research project is to use unique laboratory approaches to replicate environmental wind patterns and air pollution in the vicinity of structures. As part of this project, you will be involved in the design and fabrication of a bespoke building model for windtunnel and watertunnel testing. If you want to undertake measurements of the flow confronting and entering the building, you will be trained in laser-diagnostic technologies such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF). As a result of these experiments, cutting-edge measurements will be available for the analysis of the aerodynamic processes that link outside and indoor air quality.
