With this PhD studentship in the topic of Experimental Aerodynamics and Environmental Flows, you will have the opportunity to work with our world-renowned experimental fluid mechanics research group. If you work in the experimental fluid mechanics research laboratory, you will join a group of highly driven researchers whose efforts are geared toward applying cutting-edge diagnostics to better understand the physics of turbulent flows. We are a member of the National Wind Tunnel Facility of the United Kingdom, and we have multiple wind tunnels and water channels on our campus for the study of experimental fluid mechanics (see www.southampton.ac.uk/windtunnels/ for more information on this).
The goal of this research project is to use unique laboratory approaches to replicate environmental wind patterns and air pollution in the vicinity of structures. As part of this project, you will be involved in the design and fabrication of a bespoke building model for windtunnel and watertunnel testing. If you want to undertake measurements of the flow confronting and entering the building, you will be trained in laser-diagnostic technologies such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF). As a result of these experiments, cutting-edge measurements will be available for the analysis of the aerodynamic processes that link outside and indoor air quality.

Look through our courses to find the one that’s right for you Among the subjects we teach include the arts and humanities, business, law, earth and environmental science, engineering and computing, medicine and healthcare science, physics and mathematics, as well as social sciences and education, among others. The University of Southampton is ranked first in the United Kingdom for both civil engineering and electrical and electronic engineering, according to the Times Higher Education (2021 Guardian University Guide).
Graduates in employment rank Southampton fourth in the Russell Group, and 96 percent of our graduates were in employment or further study 15 months after graduation, according to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA Graduate Outcomes 2017/18). (published in 2020). Southampton graduates are working at a variety of high-profile companies, including the BBC, Dyson, the NHS, PwC, JP Morgan, and others. Once you graduate, you will become a member of a worldwide network of over 220,000 alumni from more than 180 countries, which includes you. Students with exceptional talent are encouraged to apply for scholarships at the University. International Merit Scholarships are available to international students studying a variety of subjects, and the University collaborates with a number of international scholarship and sponsorship organizations such as Chevening, Commonwealth Scholarships, Fullbright, among others. Southampton is a thriving and bustling city located 80 minutes from central London. It’s a welcoming, safe, and walkable city that’s abundant in parks and green spaces. In addition to being located on the English south coast, Southampton also has one of the hottest climates in the United Kingdom. In a survey conducted by Big 7 Travel in 2019, Southampton was ranked as the 10th friendliest city in the United Kingdom (*The 50 Friendliest Cities in the United Kingdom, Big 7 Travel, 2019). Try new things, meet new people, and discover your new city by joining one of the more than 300 clubs and societies available. Student arrivals at the University of Southampton in January and September are welcomed with a meet and greet service that includes a free pick-up from Heathrow and Gatwick airports, as well as speeches by faculty members and events held before and throughout the first few weeks of classes. As addition as many social and welfare networks, there is an international student support service and an English language training section that are specifically for international students. Following the publication of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, Southampton University was ranked eighth in the United Kingdom for research intensity and eleventh in the United Kingdom for both the volume and quality of research conducted. Over 97 percent of the research conducted at the University of Southampton was deemed to be “world-leading” or “internationally good.” Accommodation at University Halls of Residence is guaranteed for all international students throughout the duration of their studies at the university. There are 20 Halls of Residence in Southampton and Winchester, with a total population of approximately 3,000 students. Accommodation options range from en suite to standard, with catered and shared room options also available. Students who live in Southampton’s halls of residence also receive a free bus pass on the Unilink system, making commuting about the city convenient and affordable. Students can also obtain private rental housing through the Accommodation Service, which provides lists and guidelines on available houses that are updated on a regular basis. Only a little more than 60 minutes from London, Southampton is a dynamic and busy city. A number of other UK and European cities are easily accessible via public transportation, and the tourist towns of Winchester, Salisbury, and Bournemouth are all within driving distance, as is the New Forest and the world-famous Stonehenge. A warm climate may be found in the English south coast, which includes Southampton, making it one of the warmest places in the United Kingdom. Southampton, which has been known throughout history as the ‘Gateway to the World,’ continues to be a prominent international port. Yacht races such as the Volvo Ocean Race and the BT Global Challenge have taken place in its marina, which has attracted high-profile international participation. The city’s population of around 221,000 people includes approximately 40,000 students, and as a result, the city offers a diverse range of entertainment, sporting, and recreational opportunities.
