The University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom invites outstanding international students for the New Materials for Sustainable Biomass Oxidation Catalysis Studentship for the Ph.D. Degree Students in Chemical Science. International students who aim to take their skills to the next level can now start their application for the academic year of 2022-2023.

The Ph.D. Studentship for 2022, is an exciting opportunity for the Ph.D. international students to develop their skills and knowledge in the transformation of the biomass-derived chemical feedstocks into the monomers for the carbon-neutral plastics manufacturers. The Ph.D. multidisciplinary is the interface of chemistry and material science. The scholarship value will be up to £15,609 for the living stipend and other related fees and a full tuition fee coverage.

Course Description

International students will explore the synthesis of the mixed metals oxide that is based on the vanadates, zeolites, and molybdates that will be evaluated by the students on their catalytical properties from the selective oxidation of the furan based fed to stock to the precursors of the plastic materials.

The project is a combination of the advanced structural analysis and synthetic chemistry, characterization of the sorption, and spectroscopic way of testing the catalytical properties and the opportunity to obtain and focus on one or more aspects of the projects, if you are one of the students who are interested in the developments of the crystallography, this course will be one of the central points.

The course will give an opportunity to the students to obtain the right knowledge and experience they need in materials synthesis and evaluation of the catalyst, skills in teamwork and communication in science and research will be used, and work thoroughly as a team. The position will appeal to candidates with a strong interest in the synthesis of new materials and catalysis.

It is a multidisciplinary doctor who sits at the intersection of chemistry, materials science, and manufacturing. Students will be placed in the most modern laboratories in the Factory for Materials Innovation at the University of Liverpool as part of a larger project involving teams from the University of Oxford and industry. MIF not only houses excellent university research facilities, but it is also a permanent location for many industrial scientists.

Project Wider Context

This Ph.D. program is part of a large project that aims to provide the scientific basis that will enable the UK consumer chemicals sector to be sustainable and carbon neutral. The chemical consumer goods industry produces products for cosmetics, vitamins and dietary supplements, detergents, household chemicals, soaps, perfumes, and foods. Although several steps have been taken to make the sector more sustainable, the use of primary petrochemicals and other volatile and/or polluting commodities remains widespread.

The project will develop routes for the synthesis and recycling of chemical feedstocks that are independent of primary petrochemicals. These new materials must not only be durable and carbon-neutral, but must also offer high productivity, be inexpensive for mass production, and not demonstrate long-term environmental sustainability after use. This requires new catalysts and catalytic processes.
