About the Scholarship:

In the year 1821, the foundation for what is now known as Heriot Watt University, a prestigious public research university, was laid. The institution provides a plethora of educational opportunities at the undergraduate, graduate, and research levels. The university first started off as the School of Arts of Edinburgh when it was established, but in 1966 it was granted a royal charter, which elevated it to the status of a university. It is one of the oldest educational establishments of its kind in the United Kingdom.

The university’s campuses in Edinburgh, Kuala Lumpur, and Dubai all have cutting-edge facilities and provide students with a one-of-a-kind learning atmosphere. The primary campus is situated in Edinburgh and extends across an area of 380 acres. It is comprised of academic buildings, student apartments, libraries, healthcare and sports facilities, as well as the office of the student union. The United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom participate in exchange programs that are made possible through the Dubai campus. Putrajaya, Malaysia is home to a purpose-built campus that holds the distinction of being the first “green campus” in the entirety of Malaysia.

The academic offerings at Heriot Watt University are dispersed over five main schools. Undergraduate programs in architectural engineering, civil and structural engineering, geography and urban studies, construction project management, and biology are all available under the School of Energy, Geoscience, Society, and Infrastructure. In addition, it provides postgraduate courses in engineering specializations such as civil, water, and safety engineering; building, planning, and urban design; energy and renewables; construction management; geoscience and petroleum engineering; marine, environment, and climate change; housing, real estate, and social policy; and more. The School of Engineering and Physical Sciences at this university offers degrees in engineering in a wide variety of specializations, including chemical, mechanical, computer science, electronics, and electrical engineering, among others. In addition to that, it provides a Bachelor of Science degree in both chemistry and physics.

Theodore S. Clerk, the first architect from Ghana and the developer of the port city of Tema, graduated from Heriot Watt University. Sir Nicholas Grimshaw, the president of the Royal Academy, Iain Baikie, a prize-winning physicist, also graduated from Heriot Watt University. Maurice Tulloch, the CEO of Aviva, also graduated from Heriot Watt University.

The university has many campuses, including three in Scotland and one each in Malaysia and Dubai. All of these campuses are located outside of Scotland. Heriot-Watt University has excelled in the fields of physical sciences, mathematics, business and management, engineering, and the built environment, and it was recognized for its achievements in these areas by the Scottish Council of Development and Industry, which presented the university with an award. Times Higher Education honored it by bestowing the title of “International University of the Year” upon it in 2018.

Within six months of graduating, 95 percent of students who received their first degree from Heriot-Watt were either employed or continuing their education, making it the university in Scotland with the highest average incomes for graduates (Times Higher Education).

The Heriot-Watt University International Students Advice Office offers direction and assistance to students from other countries who are enrolled at the university. They are able to assist with providing useful advice, such as how to open a bank account in the United Kingdom, how to drive in the United Kingdom, how to register with the police in order to have a visa renewed, how to make travel arrangements in the local area, the contact information for embassies and consulates in Edinburgh, and much more. Additionally, the International Student Guide offers valuable information that can be used before departure.

In addition, at the beginning of each semester, the International Students Advice Office at Heriot-Watt offers airport pickups, which are then followed by a series of events intended to welcome and orient new students.

A significant percentage of graduates from Heriot-Watt University are employed in graduate-level positions six months after they leave the university, earning it a high ranking for graduate employment. As a result of the Research Excellence Framework in 2014, Heriot-Watt University moved up to the 33rd position in the UK, moving up from the 45th position the previous time. Heriot-Watt University is placed 22nd in the United Kingdom and third in Scotland for receiving 3* and 4* ratings.

The Heriot-Watt accommodation department not only assists students in finding off-campus housing if it becomes required but also assigns students to available rooms on campus. The Edinburgh Campus contains nearly 1,600 rooms, including both private and communal accommodations with en suite bathrooms. On the Scottish Borders Campus, there are 200 self-catered rooms and flats, and the university also leases flats off campus and in the town center. There is no student housing available on the Orkney Campus; however, the university’s accommodation office can help students locate apartments and houses in the nearby town of Stromness.

Heriot-Watt University is comprised of a total of six campuses, including the Edinburgh Campus, the Scottish Borders Campus in Galashiels, the Dubai Campus in Dubai Academic City, the Orkney Campus in Stromness in the north of Scotland, a new campus in Putrajaya in Malaysia for MBA students, and an association with West London college. The Orkney Campus is located in the north of Scotland. The primary campus, which is located on the outskirts of Edinburgh, is one of the most up-to-date in the entire United Kingdom.

The travel connections between the Heriot-Watt campuses in Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders are top-notch. Because Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, it has excellent connections to other parts of the country as well as the rest of the world. Galashiels is a charming market town, and the location of the Scottish Borders Campus makes it easily accessible from Edinburgh via road in only one hour. As Edinburgh continues to flourish as a major financial, business, cultural, and tourism hub in Europe, direct flight connectivity to and from the city are continually expanding. Direct air services to and from Edinburgh are growing all the time.

There are regular direct flights to London (just one hour), Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Brussels, Zurich, and New York, amongst other destinations, that depart from Edinburgh Airport, which is only five minutes away from the Edinburgh Campus when traveling by vehicle.
