The University of Edinburgh offers a Julius Nyerere Scholarship to a Tanzanian student who wishes to pursue a postgraduate Master’s degree in any of the University’s subjects.
Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, who led Tanganyika to independence in 1961 and later became Tanzania’s first prime minister and president, was honored with the Julius Nyerere Scholarship.

Nyerere was awarded a scholarship to the University of Edinburgh in 1949, where he earned a Masters of Arts in Economics and History.
He was the first Tanzanian to study at a British university and just the second in Africa to get a university diploma.

The university only offers one scholarship each year, and it is completely funded. Note that the Julius Nyerere Master’s Scholarship is extremely competitive, and only the most qualified candidates who possess all of the desired attributes are considered.

The Julius Nyerere Master’s Scholarship will cover the full international tuition fee, £10,000 in living expenses, and a round-trip flight from Tanzania to the United Kingdom.
The Nyerere Scholarships give money for bright Tanzanian students to study at the University of Edinburgh, following in Nyerere’s footsteps. The Centre of African Studies will grant a one-year postgraduate fellowship to a Tanzanian student to study a Masters-level program at the Centre of African Studies thanks to the generous generosity of a benefactor.
