About the Scholarship:

The P.E.O. Sisterhood is a nonprofit organization whose major goal is to enhance educational opportunities for women by providing scholarships, grants, and loans. P.E.O. was founded in 1869 by seven young college women from Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, and is one of North America’s oldest women’s organizations. Today, P.E.O. is a global organization with over 500,000 members with branches in the United States and Canada. Chapter DE, Kern County’s oldest P.E.O. Chapter, was founded in the City of Delano in 1923.  P.E.O. International now supports four scholarship programs and one loan program: Education Loan Fund, International Peace Scholarship, Program for Continuing Education, P.E.O. Scholar Awards, and STAR Scholarship. P.E.O. also owns and runs Cottey College, a private women’s college in Nevada, Missouri. P.E.O. membership is not necessary for grant or loan recipients or Cottey College students. Except for International Peace Scholarship awardees, all recipients must be sponsored by a local P.E.O branch. This requirement permits chapter members to make a difference in the lives of “their” kids.

P.E.O. is a philanthropic organization in which women celebrate women’s growth, educate women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans, and Cottey College stewardship, and push one another to reach their best objectives. The P.E.O. Sisterhood offers its members lifelong friendship, personal growth, and support; similarly, local chapters form the cornerstone of P.E.O. and assist sustain its International and State philanthropies. There are currently six P.E.O. chapters in Kern County, with a total of around 235 members: four branches in Bakersfield, one chapter in Delano, and one chapter in Wasco.  After being invited by members of a local chapter, any woman over the age of 18 can be considered for membership in P.E.O. While a prospective member must proclaim her faith in God, P.E.O. does not discriminate on the basis of age, ethnicity, political affiliation, or education.
