About the Scholarship

The University of Waikato initiated a scholarship in 2004, The Michael Baldwin Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship aims to commemorate the memory of Michael Baldwin who has served as one of the dedicated staff members until his passing in 2003. Prior to his tenure at the University of Waikato, Michael had a significant teaching career in Papua New Guinea, and he contributed significantly to the educational journey, at the institution known as the University of Goroka.

This scholarship is a tribute to Mr. Baldwin’s commitment as an educator and his sincere dedication to supporting others in their educational pursuits. Its establishment was made possible through the generous contribution of the Baldwin family.

Michael Baldwin is a former staff member of the University of Waikato and was born in 1947. He has devoted his life to education since his graduation from the University of Canterbury with a degree in Mathematics. He worked as a secondary teacher in New Zealand and started his teaching journey in Papua New Guinea in 1970. Michael played an important role in coaching athletes, and education, and contributing a positive impact to the student’s life.

Michael Baldwin continued his profession in Wellington upon his return to New Zealand before joining the University of Waikato’s Foundation Studies Department. He specialized in helping international students develop in their education and excel in their studies and ambitions. Tragically, Michael Baldwin passed away at the age of 55 in 2003.

To pay tribute to his memory, Baldwin’s family established a scholarship for international students from the South Pacific Nations to pursue their higher degree in full-time study at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. The scholarship was named in his honor which aims to support the students in need of financial assistance.
