10 Top International Scholarships for Food Science Majors

Graduates who have earned a degree in food science are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the growing demand for meals that are produced in a manner that is both high in quality and environmentally efficient. The field of food science is growing as an increasing number of individuals become aware of the necessity of having an understanding of the components of food in order to develop brand-new goods and enhance those that are already on the market.

Food technologists provide their knowledge and experience in the field of food science to the process of producing foods for the global food industry by providing assistance in this process.

Opportunities for funding in the subject of food science may have certain conditions, such as participation in a program that is approved by the Institute of Food Technologists or choosing a thesis topic that is relevant to a specific area of research. In addition to that, applicants might be requested to write essays or offer letters of recommendation.

The following is a list of ten scholarships associated with food that are offered by a variety of organizations (including foundations, food companies, and individual colleges).

1. Dairy Management Inc. Scholarship

Each year, the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board provides Dairy Management with funding to bestow up to eleven scholarships on undergraduate students majoring in food science who demonstrate exceptional merit. Students who are either in their junior or senior year of high school and are majoring in a dairy-related field, such as food science, are eligible to apply for these scholarships, which have a total value of $2,500 apiece. The student must demonstrate that they are dedicated to pursuing a career in the dairy industry in order to be considered for the award. One student will be chosen from the eleven people who have been granted a scholarship to earn an additional award: the James H. Loper Jr. Memorial Scholarship, which is worth $3,500.

The recipients of scholarships will be chosen based on the following criteria: academic performance; participation in extracurricular activities, particularly those related to dairy; evidence of leadership ability, initiative, character, and integrity; and an apparent commitment to a career in the dairy industry. Majors that relate to dairy include communications/public relations, journalism, marketing, business, economics, nutrition, food science, and agricultural education.

2. Clair L. Hicks Food Science Scholarship Fund

Undergraduate students who are currently majoring in food science, chemistry, food business, the food industry, engineering, or microbiology are eligible to apply for a scholarship from the Clair L. Hicks Food Science Scholarship Fund, which is managed by the Community Foundation of Louisville. This scholarship offers a one-time award of one thousand dollars to help defray the costs of college tuition. In order to be considered, potential candidates need to be legal residents of Kentucky who are currently enrolled at Sullivan University, the University of Kentucky, or the University of Louisville while maintaining a satisfactory academic standing. The Clair L. Hicks Food Science Scholarship Fund was founded to provide financial aid in the form of scholarships to help pay the costs of attending college or university for students who are majoring in Food Science or other food-related fields. Food science, chemistry, engineering, microbiology, food industry, and food business are all examples of programs that pertain to the food industry.

Requirements

  • This program is available to high school seniors in the state of Kentucky who are planning to continue their education at an accredited college or university (preference is given to students attending college in the state).
  • All applicants must be committed to pursuing a degree in a discipline that is somewhat connected to the food science industry (e.g., chemistry, engineering, food business, food industry, food science, microbiology).
  • They must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5.

3. Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation Scholarship

More scholarship money is awarded by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation to undergraduate students majoring in food science and dietetics than any other organization in the United States. Students enrolled in any level of higher education are welcome to submit an application for one or more of the Foundation’s scholarships, the amounts of which range anywhere from $500 to $25,000 for each recipient. The type of degree program that applicants are currently enrolled in is one of many factors that will determine whether or not they meet additional eligibility requirements.

4.  Food Marketing Institute Scholarship Program

The Food Marketing Institute Scholarship Program is offered on an annual basis to undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled full-time in a food science or agriculture major at any accredited educational institution in the United States and who have reached at least the junior-level status. Candidates must demonstrate a passion for the food sector, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or better, and agree to attend and participate in the SQF International Conference in order to be eligible for financing of up to $3,000. Students who are currently enrolled in degree programs in food and agricultural science and who have a genuine interest in the subject of authorized food safety audits are eligible to apply for scholarships that are being sponsored by the FMI Foundation. 

These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic aptitude, potential for leadership, motivation, and initiative, as well as a strong interest in the food business and the auditing profession. The competition for these scholarships is fierce, and the selection criteria are stringent. It is our hope that the recipients of our scholarships will be able to realize their ambition of securing employment in the specialized field of licensed food safety auditing.

5. Rocky Mountain Institute of Food Technologists Scholarships

Students who are interested in pursuing a postsecondary education in food science and who are residents of the Rocky Mountain region of the United States may be eligible for scholarships provided by the Rocky Mountain section of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). The inhabitants of certain states, such as Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico, are eligible to apply for these scholarships, which are offered separately from the scholarships that are offered by the IFT Foundation. This year, there will be eight scholarship beneficiaries who aim to study food science, meat science, nutrition, or a field that is closely related to any of these subjects. Each recipient will get an award in the sum of $1,000.

6. Feeding Tomorrow General Undergraduate Scholarship

Students who are enrolled full-time in an Institute of Food Technologists-accredited bachelor’s degree in food science program can apply for the Feeding Tomorrow General Undergraduate Scholarship. This scholarship is open to students who want to major in food science. Students who have demonstrated academic merit and a dedication to a career in the food science industry are encouraged to submit an application. Additional qualifications include participation in extracurricular activities.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Participating in an undergraduate food science degree program that has been given the seal of approval by the Institute of Food Technologists
  • Currently enrolled as a first-year, second-year, or third-year student
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate their leadership potential, intellectual prowess, and dedication to the field of food science.
  • Take part in extracurricular activities and volunteer work in the community.

7. The Institute for Thermal Processing Specialists 

which is given to individuals who are working toward a doctoral degree in one of many subfields that fall under the umbrella of the science of food. The recipient must be a Ph.D. student who is researching food preservation via the lens of food science, food engineering, or food microbiology. Applicants are required to demonstrate that they have enrollment plans in a legitimate or approved college or university. Applicants are required to provide evidence of their dedication to the science of food profession, which might take the form of, but is not limited to, an IFT membership. 8. GOYA Foods Culinary Arts and Food Sciences Scholarship

The GOYA Foods Culinary Arts and Food Sciences Scholarship is a one-time award of $5,000 that is given to incoming first-year students who are planning to pursue a bachelor’s degree at a four-year accredited school in the United States and have a declared major in either culinary arts or food sciences. Candidates must be legal permanent residents of an approved state, be enrolled in their first year of undergraduate study, be eligible for federal financial aid, and complete a minimum of ten hours of community service for every month that they receive funds in order to be considered eligible.

Eligibility requirements and considerations

  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 out of a possible 4.0 on the scale (or its equivalent)
  • Be a U.S. Citizen, legal permanent resident, or qualifying non-U.S. Citizen (DACA recipients are eligible)
  • Prepare to start attending a degree-granting program at a two-year or four-year approved university in the United States on a full-time basis beginning with the next academic year (2021-2022).
  • Must be obtaining first undergraduate degree
  • Candidates must be beginning their academic careers as freshmen and majoring in either culinary arts or food sciences.
  • Must be willing to perform at least ten hours of community service each month in order to qualify for funding. Scholarship America® will keep a record of your participation in this activity.
  • In order to be considered for this position, applicants are expected to write an essay in response to the following question: “Please explain how Goya has improved your family traditions.”

9. Kenneth G. Weckel Scholarships

The Kenneth G. Weckel Scholarships are presented annually by the Midwest Food Processors Association (MWFPA) to meritorious undergraduate students majoring in agriculture or food science at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Platteville, or River Falls. These scholarships were established in honor of a food science professor named Kenneth G. Weckel, who made significant contributions to the advancement of vegetable and fruit processing in his research. Each application period will have a total funding pool of $4,500, which will be distributed as follows: three scholarships with a value of $1,500 each

10. US Foods Scholars Program

Since 2017, the US Foods Scholars Program has been providing meritorious students with financial assistance in conjunction with the American Culinary Federation (ACF) and the Careers via Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP). Students who are interested in the culinary arts or a related discipline such as food science and who intend to work in the restaurant sector after completion from a recognized degree program are eligible for awards. 

To date, the initiative has distributed more than one million dollars’ worth of financial assistance in the form of scholarships to deserving students. In 2021, there were a total of 18 students who were awarded a scholarship of $20,000 each to help fund their educational endeavors in food science and culinary arts. These people were picked through a selection procedure that took into consideration both their academic merit and their financial need, in addition to the student essays that were submitted.
